  1. @Ryan K: I believe that he called Vladek a murderer for a number of reasons. The first of which is the fact that he might suspect his mother’s suicide had something to do with her relationship with Vladeck. This is one of my guesses because of the dysfunction that is shown in Art’s relationship with his father and how it could be equally if not more dysfunctional with his wife who had to go through similar experiences during the holocaust. The second reason is because Art had only recently found out that his mother had intended for him to have the journals at some point. This showed to him that his mother wanted him to know and understand his parents experiences in the holocaust. The last reason is that he needed the journals in order to write his story more accurately and without them it became much more difficult.
@Moritz: I believe that it was important to tell the story of his mothers death without mice being used. If he had used mice I believe it wouldn’t have had such a strong imagery and resounding effect on the audience. It made the read keep the story in mind throughout the next few chapters making the horrific nature of the details reflect in how the rest of the book was read.
@Garret: I don’t think there is a right and wrong person in Vladeck and Mala’s relationship. I think in their own special ways they both feed into the dysfunction of the relationship making it an unhappy experience for both. Mala is overly concerned about money and Vladeck is overly possessive of his things. As a result both of them have different priorities in their lives making the relationship suffer as a result.
Why do you think Art decided to keep the parts about himself that were less than attractive in the book? Why didn’t he just show his frustration with his father?
Do you believe that Vladeck and Art’s relationship will be able to heal and become healthy?
Do you think that Art’s Father may pass away before the book if finished due to his poor health?
